Why not add an index for every query?

Indexes consume storage and are maintained when table data changes. Additional indexes increase the work of INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE and MERGE. Index design therefore balances query speed against update cost and storage. On heavily updated tables, keep necessary indexes narrow and remove unused ones.
